Can I fly after diving?

¿Puedo viajar en avión después de bucear?

When you have the experience of diving, instructors always tell you that you have to wait 24 hours before you can fly, but why, here we explain the reason.

The air we breathe is composed of 78% nitrogen, which is found in the blood and tissues of our body. Nitrogen remains in equilibrium in our body unless pressure changes.

This equilibrium is disturbed when diving, the atmospheric pressure increases rapidly and the amount of nitrogen increases according to the depth of the dive and the duration of the dive. For this reason, the divers’ ascent to the surface must be slow, so that the body can progressively eliminate as much nitrogen as possible accumulated during the dive.

Once the dive is over, it can be said that the body has eliminated most of the accumulated nitrogen, but as each body reacts differently, it is important to take the corresponding precautionary measures.

  • If a no-decompression dive has been performed, it is recommended to wait a minimum of 12 hours before boarding a plane.
  • Extend the interval between diving and flying to 18 hours after multiple dives over several days.
  • Deep dives with decompression the recommended minimum is 24 hours.

In any of the cases the best recommendation is to wait at least 24 hours, so we recommend that you schedule your dive

considering this recommendation and do not fly to the airport.
